Downtown Eastside may seem radically bad to Canadians, but most U.S. cities have neighboroods comparable or worse. In San Francisco we have at least 3 neighborhoods that are worse. I have taken a couple strolls along Main from Hastings to Cambie, and while there is no question it's a hangout for the down and out, I was never threatened, never felt unsafe, had numerous people nod 'hello' politely, and the most I was ever asked for was a cigarette - and got a bored shrug when I said I didn' t have one. The tone of this entry is dehumanizing and hyperbolic, very unfortunate. I love Vancouver, I wish the Vancouver Guide loved it a little more - or at least had a little more respect for its own citizens.

I visited with my son who lives in the neighbourhood and works at the Carnegie....I never at any time felt unsafe, and only once was somewhat pestered for money, during my two week visit.

You make the people sound like animals, and should be totally ashamed of yourself. Park your car and observe....how absolutely ridiculous.

You must be kidding... The Charthouse is a restaurant pick? Have you been there since 1984? This place gave our family one of the worst food experiences of our lives, and when we pointed out to the management where the food came up short, they tried to tell us that we just didn't understand what we were ordering... excuse me, but what's to understand about not serving twice-fried chicken strips, canned crab, and frozen fish when you're on a dock!

How can they, or any bar for that matter be at capacity at 9pm? With ESL school enrollment down, who's going there?

I can't stand the place personally. Owners are dinks, bouncers are knobs and the band is old and the music is the exact same every week. Did I mention how fucking loud the music is?

Why would they hold a fake line-up? It doesn't make the bar any money when the patrons are on the street - there's a lineup because the bar is at capacity. And apparently you haven't been to any of the Granville bars, or Modern for that matter (just down the street, where stabbings occur once a month, like clockwork). There are fights in every bar. Get a life and grow up buddy.

Keith isn't the brightest bulb in the box. The OP posted that they have been there 20 times because as he/she says,"I can't lie, it excites me"

Maybe they like the "fight-club" atmosphere?

i don't mind the Blarney personally but it just ain't my thing. I'd rather go to a pub with people 25+ not 17+.

That's funny, I clean the beer lines at the Blarney Stone every two weeks. In fact, the company I work for put in a whole new beer system in there two years ago. I also go there quite bit and have never seen a fight. If there are always fights, why have you been there 20 times? Are you sure you are talking about the same Blarney Stone? What is a fake line-up anyway? Do you think they pay people to stand in line? Or they would rather have people outside than inside drinking? hmmmm. Everyone on this feed sounds a little suspicious!?!?!?!?!? Gotta a grudge? Get fired or something?

Blarney Stone sucks. Using a fake line-up to get people in, watered down drinks and draught beer that tastes like ass(Do they ever clean the lines there??).

There are way better options for bars in Gastown. Blarney Stone is for broke-ass college kids and foreign exchange students.
